This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Beatriz Lagos from the blog Beaviajera. She is a biologist by profession who is passionate about traveling and photography. In her travel diary she has a great variety of destinations, one of them being India, where she has already traveled 2 times and from what she tells me maybe there will be a third time.
Namaste
I am Beatriz Lagos, passionate about life. Traveler and photographer. To know, experience and get excited traveling around the world. You can find my best stories in my blog BeaViajera.
When did you feel the "Call of India"?
My first trip to India was in 1994. I returned 25 years later and still have it in my future travel destinations.
What was the main reason that made you choose India as a destination?
India is smells, colors, chaos and beauty. It is a unique and unrepeatable destination. I did not want to miss the opportunity to know it.
Your favorite place in India
For now, Rajasthan.
Any experience that you will thoroughly enjoy?
I have been in front of the Taj Mahal on two occasions. You are subjugated by so much beauty and architectural perfection. It thrills.
What did you like most about your trip?
On my first trip, I visited Northern India including Varanasi. India knocked me out. There were critical moments because it was a solo trip and in August, the worst month to travel to India.
At my second trip I was more prepared and in the month of February. I was able to tour Rajasthan with wonderful light and magnificent weather. I enjoyed it very much.
What about what you didn't like so much?
To India it is convenient to travel in the right season. The heat and the monsoon I suffered on my first trip took their toll. I got sick four days after arriving in the country. On the other hand, overcrowding and pollution are two issues that require adaptation.
Your biggest learning experience on the trip?
Traveling teaches you to relativize and in India much more. There is no destination comparable to India
What has been "India's Footprint on You"?
Everything lived there. Its religion, society (the caste system), its customs, gastronomy, history, architecture. It is a country that awakens many emotions.
What impact has that "footprint" had on your day-to-day life upon your return from the trip?
I had a hard time recovering from my first trip. It was a strong physical and emotional shock. However, I promised myself to return in better traveling conditions and after a few years. So I did and from my second trip I came back delighted.
Describe India in 3 words
Diversity, spirituality, colorful.
What would you have liked to know before your trip?
In the 90's people traveled in a very different way. There was no internet and everything was much more complicated. There were neither the means nor the information (and ease of access to it) that there is now. I would have liked to have more information to prepare the trip.
Would you travel to India again?
Yes, I plan to go back and see South India.
What would you like to experience on your next trip to India?
I would like to attend a Holi festival. It is one of the most popular and joyful festivities in India.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to travel to India?
Leave stereotypes at home. Go with an open, tolerant and respectful mentality. Maintain an attitude of curiosity, adaptability and empathy.
And what would you say to a person who has not felt the desire to visit India (to motivate them to do so)?
There are many reasons to travel to India. It is an incredibly diverse country, with many traditions, languages, religions and cultures. It is very enriching. Its historical heritage is unique. Its cuisine is world famous. The colorfulness is an attraction for photography enthusiasts. To travel to India is to immerse yourself in a land full of contrasts and discover new perspectives.
Any anecdotes or stories you would like to share?
"In India, tradition is stronger than love," one Indian told me. 90% of weddings in India are arranged by families. Attending a Hindu wedding is an unforgettable experience.
What are the must-haves in your suitcase for your trip to India?
Comfortable and respectful clothing. Comfortable shoes. Sunscreen and insect repellent. Medicines. Plug adapter (type C,D,M). Fan in hot months. A good guide, and much, much desire to enjoy this unique country.
I hope you have enjoyed this travel interview with Beatriz and her travels to India.
